Holy Spirit in 1 and 2 Thessalonians

We have seen in previous essays how the spread of the prophetic powers into new fields of preaching was integral to the spread of the church. The Spirit’s powers were essential in Jerusalem, Samaria, with Cornelius, and to defend the work of Paul’s first missionary journey. Is it reasonable to think that the same emphasis about the work of the Holy Spirit would be missing from the first epistle written to one of the first apostolically planted churches among the Gentiles in Europe?

Am I Saved?

If it is true that every spiritual blessing is “in Christ,” what is there outside of Him? The answer is not encouraging for those who choose to remain outside of Christ.

The Holy Spirit Gives Prophecy, Dreams, and Visions

The New Testament’s lack of reference to other specific Old Testament prophecies about the Holy Spirit should be of great concern for those seeking to explain the Spirit’s work without a reference to Joel 2. What Does It Mean to be “Full of the Holy Spirit?”

From Micah’s proclamation of his superior prophetic abilities over the disgraced prophets of his age; to the announcement of John’s prophetic ministry in announcing the coming of the Christ; to the overflowing examples of prophecy from Elizabeth and Zechariah; and to the apostles’ utterance of unknown tongues, the meaning of these individuals’ being full of the Spirit is undeniable. Each of these people was a prophet of God.

The Same Gift

The exact same  phrase, we are told, describes two gifts that have not one point of commonality between them except that they are both from God.  I understand why people are confused when they hear teaching about the Holy Spirit.  Is there another doctrine where God’s use of language is so unpredictable?

The Holy Spirit in the Gospel Accounts

Does this new prophetic ministry teach some new doctrine about the work of the Holy Spirit? The survey of the some two dozen passages that follow will show that the doctrine of the Holy Spirit’s work in the gospel accounts remains in complete harmony with the testimony of the Old Testament. About digital bible study

This is a personal ministry of Eric Owens and Jonathan Jenkins. We started our web streaming efforts in about 2002. DBS has been through several phases for the years. When 2020 turned upside down on all of us, Eric and Jonathan thought that an ongoing series lessons focused on connecting God’s people to Him and each other would be encouraging in hard time. For 4 years we ran the nightly CONNECT online gospel meeting featuring over 200 gospel preachers. Most of those lessons are preserved in the video library on our site. We continue our 20 year history of livestreamed Bible studies today.

We invite you to come along with us in our journey to get to know our our God, our community, and the truth.

Thanks for visiting
